Further Scam updates from South East Kent Police
We have received information regarding further scams that are circulating currently.

1. For information regarding an on-line pet fraud, trying to sell non-existent pets follow the link: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/news/animal-lovers-looking-for-pets-in-lockdown-defrauded-of-nearly-300000-in-two-months
2. There have been reported instances of phishing emails which impersonate Virgin Media. They can be spotted as the email address that they have been sent from was a Maltese internet provider and the grammar and spelling was not very good. It asks you to click onto a link where they then request personal data. Please always confirm something is genuine before responding to anything, in particular when they are asking for personal data and bank account details.
3. Supermarket Competition scam
A scam involving fraudsters sending text messages or emails claiming to offer Asda prizes. There are a number of messages circulating by text messages and emails that are nothing to do with Asda and may be an attempt to capture your personal details. Recent messages include supermarket voucher giveaways, prize draws, reminders to collect a package and money off promotions.
As stated above they are trying to obtain personal details and ask you to pay £1 for the delivery charge and to obtain your card details. They also have a time countdown to apply pressure on adding your details.
The prizes may vary but one of is an iPhone 11 which is one of the prizes ASDA have offered in their customer satisfaction survey previously. This is to try and add sincerity to the scam.
If you receive one of these, please DO NOT click on the link and delete it and report to Action Fraud immediately.
Please be aware these scams could change supermarket brands at any point.
4. Amazon Phishing Emails
These are emails impersonating Amazon, and looking very convincing. Like the previously listed scams, they ask for you to click a link and supply personal data and payment card details, which would enable them to purchase items using your details. Never click on a link.
5. TV Licence scam.
Fraudsters impersonating the TV licensing organisation send an email stating that your TV licence has been cancelled. A genuine email from the TV Licensing organisation will use donotreply@tvlicensing.co.uk (or donotreply@spp.tvlicensing.co.uk) to email you. The scam email is not from either of these and is actually a Dutch email company. Please be aware of this email currently circulating.

New Romney Country Fayre
We have received the following message from the New Romney Country Fayre Committee:
We are extremely sorry to announce that we have had to cancel this year’s New Romney Country Fayre, scheduled for Saturday 25th July 2020.
Clearly, this is not a course of action we have taken lightly, but the Coronavirus outbreak has brought unprecedented times. Following the new government measures announced this week, as well as guidance we have received from the Emergency Planning Dept at NHS England, this is our only viable option.
This decision is devastating for us, as we were so looking forward to welcoming our visitors and participants to this year’s Fayre. We understand how much pride people take in our community event and we are extremely sad to have to call it off for the first time in its 25 year history.
We would like to extend our sincere apologies to all our supporters, as well as the community of New Romney, for the disappointment this decision will cause. However, we have to put the safety and wellbeing of our visitors, stallholders, performers and volunteers first.
We will be contacting all those who have made financial contributions towards this year’s Fayre in due course to offer refunds or to ask if they would like to have stall deposits, donations, etc rolled over to 2021.
Even if the situation across the UK has improved by July, much of the planning and organisation of the Fayre should be taking place now. If we were to make further financial commitments and then had to cancel at short notice, this could put the long-term survival of the event in jeopardy. A number of our committee members are over 70 years of age and/or have significant health problems, meaning we have to prioritise the wellbeing of our volunteers.
This is not the end of the Country Fayre - we will be back with a vengeance next year to once again stage an event the whole town can be proud of. Please put Saturday 31st July 2021 in your diaries now and we will come together once more to celebrate New Romney’s legendary community spirit.
In the meantime, we send our support and best wishes to the whole community at this very difficult time.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) - Advice and guidance
The situation regarding the global outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) is fast moving and changing daily. However, Public Health England and the NHS are well-prepared to deal with coronavirus and the priority is to safeguard local communities which sometimes involves taking preventative measures to help reduce the risk of further cases.
There are things we can all do to help stop viruses like coronavirus spreading:
-
cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
-
put used tissues in the bin immediately
-
wash your hands with soap and water often – use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
-
try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell
-
do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.
If you are worried about your symptoms, use the online NHS 111 coronavirus service or call NHS 111. Do not go directly to your GP, pharmacy, hospital or other healthcare setting.
